A peaceful protest against greyhound racing and exportation takes place in Waterford this evening.
It’s in response to the shocking RTE programme that investigated the industry.
The documentary highlighted knackeries across Ireland, with dogs culled for as little as €10.00 in some reported cases.
The protest starts at 6.30pm at Kilcohan Park Stadium and is due to finish at 8.00pm.
Colette Kenny Brinza is the organiser, she wants to know why our taxes should fund this industry.
“It isn’t even a viable industry, it can’t sustain itself, it’s actually relying on government funding.
“Quite recently some of the very big sponsors have pulled out, the likes of FBD, Permanent TSB, Barry’s Tea and even Connolly’s Red Mills.
“The government is still supporting them, but the government is getting the money from our taxes.
“We’re taking about maybe €16,000,000 a year, and this is just to brutalise dogs.
“Why should we stand for this?”

Animal rights organisations will be holding several protests at greyhound tracks around Ireland over the coming weeks.
John Tierney, Campaigns Director of the Association of Hunt Saboteurs, says:
“Animal abuse is endemic in the Irish Greyhound Industry. It is beyond reform. The Government should stop funding the industry with taxpayer’s money.
“There are 6,000 reasons why those who care about animal welfare should attend this protest.
“Greyhound are not single-use animals that can be tossed aside.”
