A young woman from Portlaw has been selected as the Waterford Rose.

At a selection event held at the Tower Hotel on Saturday night, the judges crowned 21-year-old Cara Comerford as the Waterford Rose.

Comerford will now represent the county at the famous festival in Tralee, which takes place from August 14th to 18th.

Biomedical Engineering Student

Cara is currently in her third year of Biomedical Engineering at Munster Technological University in Cork. As part of her degree, she is completing a nine-month work placement with Stryker Neurovascular, where she is developing her interest in medical technology and healthcare innovation.

The Reg sponsored the 21-year-old in the competition.

Passion for Irish Dancing

Outside of her studies, Comerford has a strong background in Irish dancing. She has been dancing since the age of four and performs with the Mulcahy‑Bible School of Irish Dance. She also enjoys travelling, exploring new opportunities and spending time with family and friends. Speaking about her selection, Comerford said the Rose of Tralee had always been part of her life growing up. “Growing up, the Rose of Tralee was a staple in our home and I’m truly honoured to be selected as the Waterford Rose this year".

21 Contestants

A total of 21 contestants from across Waterford city and county took part in the local selection event.

The judges ultimately chose Miss Comerford to represent the Déise at the international festival later this summer.

One of Ireland’s Best Known Festivals
