Portlaw GAA Club has received planning permission to build a new 200-seat spectator stand at its grounds in County Waterford. The club had sought permission for the stand last December. Waterford City and County Council approved the development on February 13, subject to four conditions.

Details of the Development

The project includes the removal of an existing dugout, the construction of a fully covered seated stand, and the installation of a sheltered bicycle rack. The new stand will seat 200 spectators. Designers have limited the structure to approximately 4.5 metres in height and 28 metres in length. The open-sided design and sloped cantilever roof will help reduce visual impact. Landscaping plans aim to ensure the stand blends naturally with its surroundings. Evergreen hedging will flank the structure, while an existing industrial building behind the site will soften its overall profile. The club will use the stand during daylight hours only. As a result, the plans do not include floodlighting.

Inclusive Access and Cycling Facilities

The development also provides wheelchair access via a ramp to ensure inclusive seating for all supporters. In addition, the club will install a covered bicycle stand with a maximum height of 2.1 metres. The facility aims to encourage sustainable travel to matches and community events.

Club Highlights Community Investment

In its planning documents, Portlaw GAA outlined the significant investment it has made in recent years. A club spokesperson said the organisation has developed modern facilities that benefit both members and the wider community. These upgrades include an all-weather ball alley, refurbished dressing rooms, a community gym, meeting rooms and a walking track. The club also runs a range of community-focused initiatives. The spokesperson said the new stand will provide shelter and comfort for spectators attending sporting fixtures and events at the grounds.

Local Support for the Proposal

Waterford City and County Council received just one submission during the planning process. Independent councillor Declan Clune lodged that submission and expressed his support for the project. The council subsequently granted permission, clearing the way for construction to proceed once the club satisfies the attached conditions. The development marks another step forward in Portlaw GAA’s efforts to enhance its facilities and strengthen its role as a community hub in West Waterford.
