A pop up swimming pool could be coming to Dungarvan.

There have been ongoing calls for the development of a public swimming pool in the town.

Councillor Conor McGuinness has been campaigning for a pool in Dungarvan for some time.

Speaking at this week's Dungarvan/Lismore District Council meeting, he suggested that a pop up swimming pool could be the answer.

"County Kildare and I believe County Meath at present have pop up swimming pools," he explained.

"These are operated by Swim Ireland, and the local authorities and their respective Sports Partnerships."

He explained that the size of the pools is approximately 12 x 3.5 metres wide.

"They are in situ for four to six months and move around the county to other local authorities," he said.

"They provide opportunities for older people, younger people, classes, specialised access for groups etc."

A recent report on the possible development of a permanent public pool found that the cost of such a facility would be just over €23 million.

Cllr McGuinnes called for the issue to be kept on the council's agenda.

"The report recommended that there is a sufficient volume of people in the area to sustain such a facility," he added.
