A planning application has been submitted to Kilkenny County Council seeking to convert a former Ferrybank nursing home into residential apartments.

RCC Care Ltd is proposing a change of use for the Rockshire Care Centre on Rockshire Road, which ceased operations in 2022. The plan includes the development of 22 apartment units, comprising four two-bedroom units and 18 one-bedroom units.

The application also seeks permission for modifications to the existing building facades, along with all associated site works.

The proposal is currently awaiting validation by Kilkenny County Council. If accepted, a decision on the application is expected by July 31st, 2025.

According to the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA), 14 nursing homes closed in 2023, resulting in the loss of 414 beds. Additionally, 69 homes reduced their capacity, leading to a further loss of 473 beds.
