Planning permission is being sought from Waterford City and County Council for the construction of a columbarium at a graveyard in County Waterford.
A columbarium is a structure for the reverential and usually public storage of funerary urns holding cremated remains of the dead.
An application has been lodged with the local authority by Fr. Ned Hassett on behalf of the Waterford and Lismore Diocese.
The application seeks to erect a columbarium, and all ancillary site works, at the new Abbeyside, Ballinroad and Garranbane Graveyard, Abbeyside, Dungarvan.
The application was received on June 27th, and submissions can be made until July 31st.
A decision is expected on August 21st.
Last year, the Parish of St Joseph, St Benildus and St Mary’s was granted planning permission to construct a columbarium at St. Mary’s Church, Ballygunner.
