A trainee pilot is back home after being involved in a plane crash in Waterford earlier today.

The man in his 30s was flying the light aircraft out of Waterford Aero Club when it came down in a field near the airport at around midday.

The small plane had engine problems and the pilot was attempting to return to the airport when he had to perform a forced landing.

The plane clipped a branch or tree on the way down and flipped however the pilot was able to walk away afterwards.

The man in his 30s was initially brought to hospital for a check-up but didn’t receive any serious injuries so he’s now returned home.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit also attended the scene earlier.

A resident nearby told WLR News that they heard the plane overhead just before 12 midday and said that it appeared to lose power.
