Peter Grogan’s RNLI ‘Darkness Into Light’ Image Shortlisted for #MIINCalendar2026
A powerful and deeply moving photograph by Waterford photographer Peter Grogan has been shortlisted for selection in the #MIINCalendar2026, celebrating both the strength of community and the importance of mental-health awareness.
Peter’s striking image captures RNLI lifeboats from Dunmore East, Kilmore Quay and Fethard-on-Sea meeting at Hook Head, Co. Wexford at sunrise, marking the annual Darkness Into Light event. The moment symbolises hope, solidarity and remembrance for all those affected by suicide and mental-health challenges.
The photo was taken during an RNLI-coordinated training exercise, with Peter working in his volunteer role as Lifeboat Press Officer with Dunmore East RNLI. The soft early-morning light, combined with the quiet power of the lifeboats at sea, creates a moving tribute that has resonated strongly with audiences.
Peter is widely respected across Waterford and beyond for his work as a commercial, landscape and drone photographer, regularly capturing the natural beauty of the south-east while also documenting community and emergency-service life through his volunteer work with the RNLI.
Speaking through the image itself, the photograph reflects not just technical excellence, but a deep understanding of the emotion and meaning behind the Darkness Into Light movement — a cause that continues to unite communities across Ireland each year.
The final winner of the #MIINCalendar2026 will be announced on Friday, the 12th, with Peter’s image now firmly among the standout entries.
With its powerful message of remembrance, hope, and community strength, Peter Grogan’s RNLI photograph stands as a beautiful reminder that even in the darkest moments, light and support are never far away.
