On the Eve of the Winter Solstice, people are being asked to shine a light in their window from 8.30 pm to 9.05pm on Sunday evening as part of a national showing of solidarity.

It’s part of an initiative by RTE to coincide with a TV and radio programme airing at 8.30.

The national broadcaster says they see the moment as helping remember those we have lost this year, and looking to the future with hope on the eve of the solstice.
The aim of the event is to create light on the darkest day of the year, with artists spreading their message of hope in many ways.
Artist Isabel Nolan’s painting of the sun is being projected onto Reginald’s Tower in Waterford City as part of the initiative.
Isabel says the painting is called ‘Electrons don’t have scars’ -it’s an oil on canvas painting inspired by the sun.
The illumination, which is sponsored by Creative Ireland, mirrors the signs of regeneration in Waterford, the power of human resilience and the strength of community.
