People attending the Emergency Department at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) were waiting an average of 8.6 hours in May.

New figures released by the HSE to Waterford and Sinn Féin TD, David Cullinane, show that the national average is now 11 hours.

That's well above the target laid out in the Sláintecare plan.

The worst was in Mercy University Hospital in Cork where there was a wait time of over 21 hours.

Speaking to WLR News, Deputy Cullinane says the target is nowhere near being met:

"Sláintecare promised that no patient would wait any longer than four hours in an emergency department and obviously we're a long way away from that.

"If you look at the month of May, on average across all of the acute hospitals, the average wait time was over 11 hours.

"Of course, it was worse in some hospitals; over 12 hours in Connolly Hospital, just under 14 hours at the Mater Hospital, and the average wait time across all the hospitals in the Midwest, under the Limerick Hospital Group, was over 15 hours.

"We obviously have a problem across the State."

The statistics for May alone show that 35.1% of people were admitted to UHW in under six hours, 25.4% in 6-9 hours, 22% in 9-12 hours, and 21.6% in 12 hours or more.

As with the situation nationally, locally those aged over 75 who presented at the A&E waited far longer, on average, than those under 75.

In UHW so far this year, over-75s had an average wait of 11.3 hours to be admitted, while the under-75s waited 8.6 hours.

Deputy Cullinane says it's a situation that just isn't' acceptable:

"We know many of those elderly patients end up on hospital trolleys. The Minister has said that it's intolerable that we have these types of high wait times.

"But we don't have a plan to reduce high wait times in our emergency departments.

"People waiting for admission to see a hospital consultant or waiting for hospital treatment has gone up in the month of May - it's now standing at over 902,000 people on acute hospital waiting lists.

"However, that doesn't take into account the number of people who are waiting in emergency departments for long hours."
