A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle at a motorway junction in Co Louth in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident took place at junction 16 southbound on the M1 motorway in Dundalk at around 2.45am.

A male pedestrian, aged in his 40s, was killed.

The driver, a man in his early 50s, and his three passengers, aged in their 50s and 40s, were treated by ambulance personnel at the scene for non-life threatening injuries.

The scene of the collision has been preserved to allow for a technical examination of the scene, and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

In two separate incidents, a pedestrian in his late teens died after a traffic collision in Co Kerry on Saturday night while a man in his 20s died in a single-vehicle crash in Co Roscommon in the early hours of Sunday morning.
