During peak-time school traffic, a new one-way traffic system in the Newtown area is causing driver confusion.

Phase 2 of a one-way traffic management system in the Newtown area of Waterford City commenced yesterday, Wednesday 4th February.

It  will operate until Tuesday 28th April 2026.

Drivers are reminded on a left turn at the park, with no entry at the top of Water Street near St. Declan’s School.

However, many drivers were continuing to drive the route as normal this morning.

Some motorists claimed to WLR that signage advising of the changes was missing this morning.

Phase 2 is proposed for St. Alphonsus Road, a section of Lower Newtown Road and a section of Water Street.

This phase follows on from Phase 1, which is currently in operation on Wilkin Street and Passage Road.

Waterford City and County Council will monitor and assess the operation of Phase 2.

Public Consultation for One-Way System

The consultation period will run from Wednesday 4th February 2026 to Wednesday 4th March 2026.

After the trial, the Council will determine whether to continue, discontinue or alter Phase 2.

The scheme includes traffic calming measures, footpath widening, buildouts, parking realignment and placemaking.

The proposals also include making Phase 1 of the system on Wilkin Street and Passage Road permanent.

Two new pedestrian crossings are also proposed at Lower Newtown Road and Water Street.

Accompanying these are junction tightening and traffic calming measures in the area.
