Waterford City welcomed the Mayor of Ramallah City, Issa Kassis, and the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland, Dr Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid at City Hall on Friday.
Mayor of Waterford City and County, Councillor Joe Conway hosted the delegation in the Mayor's Parlour accompanied by Mayor of the Metropolitan Area, Councillor Jody Power.
Diplomatic aide Dania Dasouqi from the Palestinian Embassy and members of Waterford-Ramallah Twinning Committee were also in attendance. The Palestinian flag was flown from the Council building for the occasion.
The plight of Palestine was discussed as they reflected on the short ceasefire that ended that day. The Mayor of Ramallah Mr.Kassis, stressed the importance of building community links and cooperation between the two cities as part of the twinning.
Earlier in the week, the Waterford-Ramallah Twinning committee held its first public event on Thursday 29 November at St Patrick’s Gateway Centre, coinciding with the UN Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The information night was opened by the Mayor Jody Power.
Members of the Waterford-Ramallah Twinning Committee spoke about the links that have already been created between the two cities, including between sports clubs, religious centres, schools, other community groups and professions.
Committee members spoke of learning from the community groups that have twinned so far and from other twinnings Waterford city is involved in.
