Avid birdwatchers have flocked to Brownstown Head this morning to catch a glimpse of a paddyfield warbler bird that has been sighted in the locality.
Members of Birdwatch and Birdwatch Ireland are in East Waterford this morning alongside many photographers on the hunt for a glimpse of the bird.
It is migratory, wintering in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. It is a rare vagrant to western Europe although there are small breeding populations along the western shores of the Black Sea around the border between Bulgaria and Romania.
It is believed this is the first time that this species of bird has ever been documented in Ireland.
Corncrake sightings have also been reported in the locality - corncrakes were once numerous across Ireland but are now confined to Donegal and West Connacht.
