More than 12,000 people are now waiting for diagnostic scans at University Hospital Waterford, according to new figures released by the Department of Health. The data for Q2 2025 shows that 1,879 patients have waited over a year, highlighting severe strain on Waterford diagnostic scan waiting lists.
Across the country, almost 300,000 people are waiting for CT, MRI, ultrasound, or vascular ultrasound scans. The figures point to a system that continues to fall behind demand.
Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane said the scale of delays shows how urgently extra capacity is needed. He said patients face long waits for essential diagnostics that determine their next step in care.
“More than 12,000 people are now waiting for vital scans in Waterford,” he said. “Behind every statistic is a person living with pain or uncertainty, waiting far too long for answers.”
Deputy Cullinane said the delays have serious consequences for patient outcomes. He said early diagnosis is essential to prevent conditions from worsening during long waits.
“We need more scanners, longer opening hours, and more radiographers and radiologists to run them,” he said. “The Government must act now to end these unacceptable delays.”
Without significant investment, clinicians warn that Waterford diagnostic scan waiting lists will continue to grow, leaving more patients facing long delays for crucial tests.
