The Minister for the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, is due to visit Passage East this morning following severe flooding in the village.

The visit is scheduled to take place at around 10.30am.

Minister to Meet Flood-Affected Residents

Minister Moran will meet residents affected by the flooding at the local community centre.

He will also meet local representatives to discuss the impact of the flooding and the long-standing issues linked to a brook above the village.

Waterford TD and Government Chief Whip Mary Butler confirmed the visit after she travelled to Passage East last week to assess the damage.

Brook Overflow Causes Widespread Damage

The flooding occurred last weekend after a brook located above the village burst its banks.

The overflow happened during a Status Yellow weather warning for Waterford.

Water entering the village caused significant damage to some homes, particularly in the Brookside area.

Floodwater also spread through other parts of Passage East, including Post Office Square.

Rainfall and Weather Warnings Contributed to Flooding

Waterford and the wider south east experienced excessive rainfall in recent weeks.

Met Éireann issued several rain weather warnings during that period.

Saturated ground and high water levels contributed to the brook overflowing and flooding the village.

Council Warned of Risk Before Flooding

Independent Councillor Declan Barry said the risk of the brook overflowing had been raised with Waterford City and County Council in the days before the flooding occurred.

He said the brook has posed a recurring problem for the village for many years.

Calls for Guaranteed Funding

Local representatives are expected to ask the Minister to guarantee funding to address the issue permanently.

Residents want urgent works carried out to prevent further flooding.

Concerns remain that without intervention, the village could face repeat flooding during future heavy rainfall.
