A record one million euro worth of Shop Local Vouchers has been sold by Dungarvan and West Waterford Chamber of Commerce.

It's been announced this morning that they have achieved their 'Let's Make it a Million' campaign target.

It surpasses last year's figure of €900,000, which was kept circulating in the local economy.

Chamber President, Oren Byrne, has told WLR News it shows people are putting Waterford first.

"It really shows that people are looking at the town thinking 'what's here that I can be buying?'" she said.

The vouchers can be used in a huge variety of businesses, with over 200 local ones involved.

Hair dressers, spas, salons, clothing, food and drink, and more can be bought with the Shop Local vouchers.

The 'Let's Make it a Million' initiative had been launched by Leo Varadkar in October.

Oren says he will be delighted to hear that they've hit that target.

Supporting Trade and Enterprise has been in his remit up until recently.

"How much of that could have been spent online, I think that's really the thing to think about," Oren said.

The goal of one million was only hit in the last few days, just a fortnight before the year ends.

Despite being confident they would hit the goal, Oren says it wasn't an easy task.

When asked if next year's goal would be over a million euro, the answer was neither yes or no.

"We'll have to put our thinking caps on next year and see if we can stretch it a bit further but you never know," Oren said.

Oren says people like the vouchers because they are useful and "make sense."

The Shop Local Vouchers are available all year round and can be purchased from the Chamber of Commerce itself.
