It's unlikely that Waterford City and County Council will invest funding from the National Transport Authority to upgrade the Old Kilmeaden Road.
The news was delivered by Senior Roads Engineer with Waterford Council, Gabriel Hynes at the most recent Comeragh District meeting.
Councillor John O'Leary had sought an update on proposed works.
"The negotiations with the NTA in relation to the High Road in Kilmeaden weren't very favorable," Councillor O'Leary said to the chamber," could I ask if there's a low-cost safety scheme that could be included?
"Is there any way we could go forward from that? It is the junction I am particularly worried about.
"We got a certain amount of knowledge that something would be done with the junction at the time when active travel poses were in favor of rural areas being looked after, or allocated funding."
In response, Senior Roads Engineer Gabriel Hynes told the most recent Comeragh District meeting that it is unlikely that Active Travel will ever provide funding.
He said," The funding we have available to us under the low-cost safety is in the region of €460,000 to €500,000 per annum, and we divide that up between the three districts.
"The cost for the traffic calming scheme on the Old Kilmeaden Road is in the region of €700,000, so we would not be in a position to fund it under low-cost safety.
"We will apply for specific funding for it, but as we do not have a source of funding there, we should advise that the scheme would not proceed in the area at present."
