A new ten million euro scheme to support resident safety in nursing homes has been announced.
The scheme will see up to €25,000 available to each qualifying nursing home for relevant works to comply with HIQA regulations.
Speaking to WLR News, Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Waterford TD Mary Butler, outlined why the scheme was developed.
"What I have heard from providers is that sometimes when they get a HIQA report, they might point out for example that there are challenges with fire safety and infection prevention and control. All these measures can become costly, so this scheme will see up to 25,000 euros available to each qualifying nursing home to comply with HIQA regulations.
"The good news is that it is backdated to January 1st, 2020, so any work, private or voluntary that was undertaken during COVID, will be included and the application will run through 2024.
"In simple terms, if you did some work in your nursing home and it cost you €40,000, you will be able to claim €25,000 against that, and it will assist nursing homes in meeting HIQA regulations.
"The scheme will commence on January 1st, 2024."
