Waterford City and County Council has said a large dead whale near Clonea Strand will be left to decompose naturally.
In January, the 65 foot long whale was washed ashore on the rocks between Ballinclamper and Ballinard car parks.
Labour Councillor Thomas Phelan sought an update on any plans to remove the whale when speaking at this month's Dungarvan/Lismore District meeting of Waterford Council.
"It's a safety hazard with people clambering over rocks to get to it," he said.
"It may also be a health hazard as it becomes malodorous. It's not acceptable to local residents to leave it rot and it's not appropriate near a Blue Flag beach."
Senior Engineer Gabriel Hynes responded, saying the matter has been discussed but the whale is in "a difficult location" with access problems.
"It's our view that we will leave the natural process take place and hopefully the tide will take the whale out," he said.
"We can't intervene given where it's located. I was hoping the last storm might have taken it away but it didn't - that may happen yet."
