A new Sinn Féin member has joined Waterford City and County Council.

Kate O'Mahoney has been co-opted onto Waterford Council to fill the Sinn Féin seat vacant as a result of the election of Conor McGuinness to Dáil Éireann in General Election 2024.

The official co-option took place at City Hall yesterday (Monday). Sinn Féin now has seven seats on Waterford Council.

In a statement, the newly elected Deputy McGuinness said Kate brings "great experience and knowledge to the job, and I know she will be a hardworking, capable and determined public representative."

He added: "I look forward to working closely with Kate and as part of Waterford Sinn Féin's team of TDs, Councillors and MEP.

Cllr O'Mahoney will represent the Dungarvan Local Electoral Area and has pledged to "work hard and deliver for the Déise".

"I want to wish Deputy McGuinness the very best of luck in the Dáil and it is a great honour to have been co-opted to his Council seat. While I have extremely big shoes to fill, I am committed to giving this role my all and deliver for the people of the Dungarvan LEA and wider Waterford," she said.
