
South East Technological University will benefit from the approval of a new professorship grade for Technological Universities.
The Minister for Further and Higher Education has introduced a full professor grade under the Technological University Act 2018. The change applies to all five Technological Universities, including SETU.
New Academic Posts Nationwide
The Government will create 50 full professor posts across the sector. An initial phase will appoint 25 professors, followed by a second phase of 25.
The new grade strengthens academic leadership within Technological Universities. It also supports expanded research activity and research-led teaching.
Impact for SETU and the South East
The professorship grade will enhance SETU’s role in regional development. The university already delivers industry-focused education across the South East.
The new posts will support stronger links between SETU and enterprise. They will also help attract senior academic talent to the region.
Professors will lead advanced research and innovation projects, they will also support teaching aligned with economic and public service needs.
Supporting Growth and New Disciplines
The new grade will help Technological Universities enter new discipline areas. These include fields such as pharmacy and veterinary medicine.
The change will also strengthens SETU’s capacity to compete nationally and internationally.
Reaction to the Announcement
Welcoming the decision, Minister of State John Cummins said it was positive news for Waterford and the wider region. Minister Cummins said SETU already plays a critical role in skills development and regional growth.
SETU will now engage with the department and the Higher Education Authority. That process will progress appointments during the first recruitment phase.
The approval marks a significant step in the continued development of Technological Universities.
