The future of Kilmacthomas Post Office has been secured with a new ownership model.
Mary Power is retiring as the well-known and popular postmistress this week and owner of Phelan’s Centra, Pat Phelan, is taking over the running of the post office which is located within his store.
Speaking to WLR News, Pat described it as a “new concept” and an “exciting venture”.
“It’s great to keep the post office within the community,” he said.
“When we tendered for the post office, there was a risk that it could have moved and gone somewhere else. Fortunately for us, An Post decided it’s the right move and they were very happy to let us take it over and run it as Mary has run it.”
Pat says the post office is an important focal point within the wider Kilmacthomas area.
“There’s a huge social aspect for customers. They come in for a chat and it’s a huge part of the local community,” he said.
“We’re grateful that it’s staying and hopefully under my reign it won’t be going anywhere.”
Customers can be assured of meeting familiar faces as Mary is staying on two days a week (Wednesdays and Thursdays), while Sinead and Trish will also be on hand to give customers a warm welcome.
Having served as postmistress in Kilmacthomas for 18 years, Mary said she is keen to retain a link with her customers.
Her association with An Post dates back to 1976 when she started at the nearby Kill Post Office (now closed).
She has seen huge changes over the years but says her favourite aspect of the job has remained dealing with all her loyal customers.
“They’re part of my family,” she said.
Mary’s last day as postmistress is this Thursday October 31st, with the new changes effective from Friday November 1st.
