The city's new storytelling trail has officially been launched today in partnership with Waterford City and County Council and Imvizar, by scanning QR codes across the Viking Triangle.

Using your smartphone, characters such as Thomas Francis Meagher will come to life on your screen.

Dublin company Imvizar is the brains behind the project, developing the augmented reality experience.

Speaking to WLR at the launch this morning, CEO of Imvizar Michael Guerin says it will bring to life what life was like in Waterford would have been like in Waterford hundreds of years ago.

"It's a visual storytelling experience, you can scan the QR code at several sites around the Viking Triangle, such as Waterford Crystal, Coffee House Lane, and Reginald's Tower.

"When you scan the QR code, you launch a virtual experience and you will meet characters such as Rachael Penrose and Anastasia Fleming who are life-sized characters.

They come to life what life would have been like at that time in Waterford".

He continues to tell us about the rich stories that Waterford has to offer.

"It's a free experience which has fifteen stories around Waterford all the way from the Vikings to Thomas Francis Meagher designing the tri-color & stories of Waterford Crystal and the rich stories that Waterford has to tell that is available by scanning the QR codes as you walk around the city".

The project was funded by Failte Ireland as part of a €500,000 investment in Waterford for projects like this.

Speaking to WLR, Mary Holohan from Failte Ireland who funded the project says that they are delighted to see this coming to completion.

"Interpretation is important when a visitor comes to a City and town and we want to find unique ways to tell the story.

"It really helps visitors get underneath the skin of the destination, and we have developed a destinations town scheme in which Waterford council was awarded 500,000 under this program and I am delighted that this new digital storytelling trail is available".
