The sale of new cars in Waterford has dropped by 6 percent so far this year.

That's the 3rd biggest drop in the country, according to the latest figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry.

Between January and July of this year, just over 2,250 new cars were sold in Waterford, which is down from just over 2,400 in 2021.

The only counties to record a bigger drop were Dublin and Monaghan, where the sales dipped by more than 11 percent.

These latest figures for Waterford are in stark contrast to the situation last year, when the county experienced the biggest increase in new car sales throughout all of 2021.

There had been an increase of 29% here.

In releasing the figures, the Society has described them as "disappointing" and say they're now 17 percent behind pre-covid numbers nationally.

They say while it appears there is an appetite for both new and used cars, supply issues are hampering overall activity.

Meanwhile, the figures for new electric vehicle sales have been positive - increasing by 80 percent on last year and 316 percent on 2019.
