A new documentary about the killing of Irish dad of two Jason Corbett, by his American wife and her father, has made the shortlist for the prestigious Emmy Awards.

The documentary ‘A Deadly American Marriage’ was one of the most-watched shows on Netflix last year.

It was directed by award-winning documentary maker Jenny Popplewell and produced by Sandpaper Films.

Based on the tragic story of Limerick man Jason Corbett, who was brutally murdered by his wife, Molly Martens, and her father, Tom Martens, the documentary is inspired by the books written by Mr Corbett’s daughter, Sarah, ‘A Time for Truth’, and Jason’s sister, Tracey Corbett-Lynch, ‘My Brother Jason.’

The 100-minute special sees children Jack and Sarah, aged 10 and eight respectively, providing statements to the police following the violence at their home in Virginia, where they explicitly detail their father’s apparent anger and temper.

Now, as grown-ups, the siblings have expressed their guilt at how they were ‘told’ by Molly to brand their father abusive to the police, with Sarah admitting she feels like she’s ‘let her dad down’.

She explains: ‘I said what Molly told me to say, I had just lost my dad. I had already lost my mum, and I didn’t want to lose anybody else. So I lied.’

She continues: ‘I have so much guilt, because, in a way, I feel like I let my dad down.

I described someone who was the complete opposite of my dad.’

‘I want people to know the truth and to know my dad as a person. My dad was a really amazing person, and what happened to him shouldn’t have happened to him.’

Jack tells the Netflix special: ‘I never saw my dad lay hands on Molly, not once in my life. I was scared and afraid and so young.

‘I had no one else in the world, and I was afraid of losing Molly.

‘My dad was killed the way no person should be killed. He was beaten to death with a cinder block and a baseball bat.

‘And no person should have to go through that, that sort of pain.’

A Deadly American Marriage has now been nominated for an Emmy Award under the category of Outstanding Crime and Documentary.

The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony in New York on May 28.

Jason Corbett’s children have expressed their ‘guilt’ at initially ‘lying’ about their father’s treatment of Molly Martens in the aftermath of his death.

The Irishman and father of two was killed by his wife, Molly Martens, and her father, Tom, after a fatal assault in 2015.

Mr. Corbett’s family said they cooperated with the Netflix crime documentary so they could issue a warning to the entire world about killers Molly and Tom Martens.
