The N25 Safety Group has welcomed what it describes as “substantial progress” in its campaign to make the busy national route safer for drivers, pedestrians, and local communities.
The volunteer-led group, which was formed to address long-standing safety concerns on the N25, says collaboration with local and national authorities has already delivered meaningful improvements, with more measures in the pipeline.
Among the milestones achieved so far are reduced speed limits, funding for upgrades, and commitments from Kilkenny County Council to tackle overgrown hedgerows and redesign dangerous junctions. The council has also begun surveying priority areas to improve visibility and enhance safety.
In addition, the group has secured engagement from the Department of Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). A successful push for funding has helped ensure resources are in place for road upgrades, while a new sub-group has been set up to manage traffic diversions during closures in order to minimise disruption.
Efforts are also underway to replace the existing speed camera with a mean speed camera zone—an upgrade that the group believes will make enforcement fairer while cutting down on dangerous driving.
Chairperson Bernie Mullally stressed the urgency of the work:
“Safety on the N25 cannot wait. Our community deserves a road that protects lives rather than endangers them. The progress made so far shows what can be achieved when local groups, councils, and government work together—but there is still more to do.”
A spokesperson for the group echoed the sentiment, highlighting the importance of cooperation between all stakeholders:
“We are encouraged by the swift and positive response from both local and national bodies. These changes will save lives and create a safer environment for motorists, pedestrians, and the local community. Our work will continue until all necessary safety improvements are fully implemented.”
