No fire safety audit to take place at Mount Suir

No fire safety audit to take place at Mount Suir

Despite a safety review of Mount Suir apartments being underway, no fire safety audit will be ordered by Waterford Council.

A full safety and structural review of the Mount Suir apartments is to be completed this summer.

This follows repeated requests from local councillors and residents of the complex.

Speaking this week at the Metropolitan District Council, Labour councillor Seamus Ryan welcomed the news. However, he says a full understanding of the structure as it stands is imperative.

"It is essential that the factual condition of the apartments and structure are determined before potential costs or liabilities arise. I welcome that because one of the things that I was seeking was that there would be list drawn up of works to be carried out at each individual apartment."

Green Party councillor, Cristiona Kiely warned failure to look at fire safety could have potentially disastrous implications.

"We don't want another Grenfell on our hands, and I think it's of paramount importance that the fire safety aspect is looked at. I brought this up at the Community Safety Partnership and I didn't seem to get a response in terms of where we're at in relation to fire safety. We all saw the video of the fire in the car park and I think that is one of the most important elements."

Claire Hartley, Senior Executive Officer with Responsibility for Housing in Waterford Council says no fire safety audit will take place.

"It'll be incorporated into the overall report - the fire safety aspects. The fire safety audit, the Fire Chief has obviously been in attendance but I wasn't aware of any audit per se. The defects will be included within the inspection report but there won't be a specific fire safety audit."
