Fundraising in Modeligo for Sham Ryan has raised an extraordinary €240,000 in just a few weeks, following a major community effort in West Waterford.
Sham, whose real name is Seamus Ryan, suffered a life-threatening medical emergency after a wasp sting triggered an anaphylactic reaction and cardiac arrest. First responders airlifted him to Cork University Hospital, where medical staff stabilised his condition and saved his life.
Sham now awaits a bed at the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dún Laoghaire, where he will begin a long and intensive recovery. His family faces significant costs linked to travel, time away from work, and ongoing rehabilitation needs.
Friends and neighbours across Modeligo and the wider West Waterford area have rallied in response. Fundraising events, including a large tractor run at the weekend, drew huge crowds despite difficult weather conditions.
Speaking on WLR’s Deise Today, close friend Michael Dalton said the level of generosity shown has been overwhelming. He described the response as unbelievable and said the volume of donations has exceeded all expectations.
Mr Dalton also highlighted that single events raised significant sums on their own, reflecting the scale of community support. He described the effort as “the very best of rural Ireland.”
Family members, friends, and organisers continue to thank everyone who has donated, attended events, or helped in any way. The Sham Ryan fundraising campaign remains ongoing as Sham prepares for the next stage of his recovery.
