A new mobile library service is to be applied for by Waterford City & County Council.
This comes following a two-year push from local Labour councillor Seamus Ryan to implement such a service county-wide.
Speaking on the existing services, he says: "I believe strongly we have the best library service in the country".
With the proposal in its early stages, the council now needs to submit the application for government approval.
Speaking to WLR News, Councillor Ryan who is himself a librarian, says he has been working on this for some time.
"Over the last two years, I have been looking for the provision of a mobile library service in Waterford to serve those areas that don't have a branch library."
Funding
Waterford Council have now been formally asked by the Department to make a submission for such a service.
If the submission is accepted, the library services in Waterford could see an expansion.
The proposed service is intended to cater for the whole county with funding from government.
Councillor Ryan added: "I would be hoping we would be successful in that application and that we would have a mobile library service right across this county."
