Tributes have been paid to Waterford City and County Council CEO Michael Walsh as his time in the role comes to an end.
Mr. Walsh has held the role since 2014, having worked with the local authority since 2000 - and has been credited with playing a key role in the establishment of the Waterford Greenway, the South East Technological University and the commencement of the North Quays Development.
The Chief Executive’s background is one of engineering, graduating from UCC in 1983 with a Civil Engineering degree. He started his career in Local Government with Waterford County Council in 1983 and worked between there and Limerick City Council for a number of years at various engineering posts until 2000 when he was appointed as Senior Executive Engineer in the former Waterford City Council.
From there he progressed to the post of Director of Services and became Waterford City Manager in November 2007. In June 2014, Michael was appointed Chief Executive of the newly amalgamated Waterford City & County Council. He is the current chair of the Housing and Building Sub Committee of the City and County Managers’ Association.
"I've always held the view that change is exceptionally a great thing, in fact I think the big challenge in life now is to be able to change. Change is so happening around us the whole of the time, change is good, it brings new energy", said Mr. Walsh.
"I think there'll be a great opportunity for a new council to sit down with a new leadership team and have a good old bust up maybe whatever it is about the strategic direction for the next five or ten years and that'll be only what we did - and that's a good thing because it will bring new energy. It will bring new change. I do genuinely appreciate the good thoughts. It's been a privilege."
