Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary has reaffirmed his interest in flying from Waterford Airport.
That's according to Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ni Mhurchu who was speaking to WLR News.
Ryanair previously informed Waterford Airport that the airline would be interested in exploring the matter once the runway extension at the airport is complete.
The newly elected Fianna Fail MEP spoke with Mr O'Leary on the matter this week.
"Michael O'Leary stated very clearly that Ryanair is interested in flying commercial flights in and out of Waterford Airport, as they did before, if the runway is extended as planned and if there is a low cost base, which makes sense as he's not going to look at this if it's not going to be profitable for Ryanair," she said.
"I think this is the time for Waterford to come into its own."
Ms Ni Mhurchu says she is engaging with Junior Transport Minister James Lawless and is also waiting for a response from Transport Minister Eamon Ryan.
"We were told the government funding was there but obviously it needs to be committed to. We're still waiting for a development so this really needs to be progressed. The clock is ticking for Waterford Airport."
This week marks 39 years since Ryanair's first flight which was from Waterford Airport to London Gatwick.
