Conor McGregor has announced he is withdrawing from the Presidential Election race.
In a post on X overnight, McGregor said: “Following careful reflection, and after consulting with my family, I am withdrawing my candidacy from this presidential race.
“This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one at this moment in time.”
McGregor’s ambition to run was met with backlash – and the former UFC star had been scheduled to present to councillors in Waterford this Friday.
Candidates must secure the support of four county councils in order to have their name on the ballot paper for the presidency.
Some councillors had signalled that they would walk out in protest should McGregor appear.
