ISME has availed of its position as a registered nominating body for Seanad Eireann with the nomination of former Waterford Independent TD, Matt Shanahan, for the Industrial and Commercial Panel in the forthcoming Seanad election.

Matt Shanahan represented Waterford in Dáil Eireann since 2020 but lost his seat in this year's General Election

In a statement, ISME has described Matt as having "many years of commercial business management experience at Board and director level."

"He has direct experience of the enterprise support sector, both as a business mentor and as a previous team member of an EI-supported company, and he has a range of business sectoral experience, having worked in the retail, energy and healthcare service sectors."

Matt Shanahan was previously a group nominee to the Oireachtas Enterprise Committee during the 33rd Dail.

He said:  Anyone who knows me or has followed my political career will know I am passionate about SME business and have concerns regarding the increasing challenges within the business environment affecting many of our indigenous sectors - I wish to see a ‘policy reset’ across Government and civil service with respect to SME consideration and I hope if elected to Seanad Eireann I can lead that change.’’

Marc O’Dwyer, Chair of ISME said:  “On behalf of our membership around the country, we wish Matt well in the election. We are delighted to nominate someone with a strong pedigree in business and an understanding of the needs of SMEs.  ISME urges its members to use their votes to support his election bid.”
