A Waterford bus driver says he has seen very few passengers wearing face masks so far. From today, anyone travelling on public transport will have to wear a face covering.
Masks are now mandatory on public transport, but the measure won't be enforced for a number of weeks.
Commuters are being encouraged to wear face-coverings while the regulations are being finalised by Government.
WLR has had reports of very few people wearing masks on public transport today with one bus driver counting only 25% of passengers wearing masks.
He says that when he pointed out to customers that they should be wearing masks, many were unaware of the ruling.
"From what I have seen so far and the trips I have done, we are getting one or two coming on with masks. It doesn't seem to be getting across. I have kinda been saying to them "you know you are meant to be wearing a mask from today" and they have been saying "oh right we didn't know" and they have been getting on. We have got shields but mainly its more for the other passengers, that's what they have got to be thinking about."
A passenger spoke to WLR and told us this."When I was booking the bus it said to wear a mask, that you are better off for your own safety and for bus drivers and everybody on the bus that you should wear a mask. I am kinda anxious about it. Everybody who isn't wearing a mask is putting everybody else at risk."
