A man in his 50s is to make a High Court bail application on Thursday, May 15th in relation to charges of dangerous driving causing death, and driving while intoxicated.
Paul Vochin, aged 56 from Raheen, Co. Wexford, has been in custody in Cork Prison since a special court sitting in Gorey on April 26th.
Fatal Collision
On April 25th, Veronica O’Grady, a ICU nurse in University Hospital Waterford was killed following a two-car collision on the N25 near Glenmore.
The following day, the accused appeared before Judge Kevin Staunton in a special sitting in Gorey.
Mr Vochin appeared via videolink this morning, May 13th before Waterford District Court.
The use of a Romanian interpreter was required.
Reflecting on the facts of the case, Judge Staunton recalled the demeanour of the accused when he was first charged.
He said: “He struck me as a man in shock. The person who represented him had been briefed just minutes beforehand.”
Bail
Bail was refused at the time due to issues with the address given at the time, given the accused was recorded as being of no fixed abode.
A High Court application for bail is to be made this Thursday.
Given the uncertainty around bail, Judge Staunton ordered that the 56-year-old be remanded in custody until May 27th.
