A man has suffered serious injuries following an assault in Waterford city last night.
The man in his 50s is being treated at University Hospital Waterford, where his condition is described as serious but stable.
Gardai on patrol in Waterford city came upon the man on Hanover street, between O'Connell street and the Quay at 8.50pm on Wednesday evening.
He was conscious but bleeding heavily from the head area, and was brought to UHW.
The area has been sealed off and a forensic investigation is taking place today.
No arrests have been made.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are particularly appealing to anyone with video footage from the area at the time of the incident to make it available to them.
