Man remains in Garda custody in connection with fatal assault in Portlaw

A 21-year-old man remains in Garda custody this morning in connection with the death of a man in Portlaw, Co Waterford yesterday.

48-year-old John Butler suffered serious injuries following an assault at a house on Brown Street in the town.

He was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where he was pronounced dead just before 4am.

A post-mortem exam is due to take place in Dublin this morning.

A 21-year-old man, who was known to the victim, was arrested at the scene of the assault and is still being held at Tramore Garda Station this morning.

John Butler, who was originally from Carrick-on-Suir, lived in Portlaw and worked at the Dr Martin Day Care Centre.

The father of two has been described as a quiet, well-liked man.

Sean White, who lives on Brown Street, says he's known John since he was a child:

"He was a very sporting lad. A nice quiet man; got along with everyone. He used to love the Tipperary hurling team, followed Tipperary. God rest him, I hope he's hurling a great match in heaven."
