A 21-year-old charged in connection with his father's death is to appear in court again later today.
John Butler, who was 48, died following an assault last week in Portlaw in Co Waterford
Stephen Butler is charged with assault causing harm on his father John in the early hours of last Saturday 11th January on Brown Street in the town.
The older man was rushed by ambulance to hospital but later passed away.
His son Stephen, who has an address at Shielbaggan, Ramsgrange, New Ross, Co Wexford, was charged ahead of an appearance at Carrick-on-Suir District Court last Sunday.
He was remanded in custody to Limerick Prison but his solicitor is to apply for bail in court today.
However Gardaí have said they will object to this on the basis that a more serious charge is likely to be brought against the accused.
Mr Butler is due to appear in Carrick District Court this afternoon.
