Uncle and nephew remain in hospital after stabbing in Carlow

A man continues to be questioned by gardaí following the double stabbing of two men who are related in Carlow town, which has left both in a serious condition in hospital.

The two men, one in his 50s and the other in his 40s, and who are uncle and nephew, suffered several stab wounds during an incident next to the River Barrow, close to Montgomery Street, around 6.45pm on Sunday.

It is understood that a young woman, who was in their company, called emergency services following the frenzied attack. They rushed to the scene and transferred both men to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny.

Both men, who are from the Staplestown Road area of Carlow town, remain in a serious but stable condition. It is believed the two men know the arrested man, who is being held at Carlow Garda station.

In a statement, gardaí said: “The two injured men remain in a serious but stable condition. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault incident.

“Shortly after 6.45pm on Sunday gardaí were called to the incident on the Barrow Track area in the town where two men were discovered.

“They (two men) were taken by ambulance to St. Luke's General Hospital, Kilkenny for treatment.

“A man in his 50s remains in custody by investigating gardaí and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Carlow Garda Station. The scene is preserved for forensic examination.”

Two areas along the river track have been sealed off by gardaí enabling forensic evidence to be gathered.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are particularly appealing to anyone with video footage from the footpath at Barrow Track at the time of the incident to make it available to them.
