More than half of adults in Waterford Metropolitan Area want to walk or wheel more, according to a new survey.
The findings come from the Walking and Cycling Index, published by the National Transport Authority.
The report provides one of the largest studies of active travel habits in Ireland and the UK.
Strong Demand for Active Travel
The survey found that 51% of adults want to walk or wheel more, while 32% want to cycle more.
Many residents already use active travel regularly.
About 45% of adults walk or wheel at least five days each week. Meanwhile, 12% cycle at least once a week.
Car use remains high. The report found that 68% of adults drive at least five days a week.
Fewer Cars on the Road
Walking, wheeling and cycling already reduce traffic levels across the region.
The report estimates these trips remove up to 15,000 cars from local roads every day.
If those cars formed a traffic queue, it would stretch around 70 kilometres.
Economic and Health Benefits
Active travel delivers strong economic and health benefits.
The report estimates an annual economic benefit of €67 million for the Waterford metropolitan area.
Cycling provides a €1.62 benefit for every kilometre travelled instead of driving. Walking provides €1.14 per kilometre.
The health benefits are also significant. Walking and cycling help prevent 149 long-term health conditions each year.
Researchers estimate the health savings at €1.8 million annually, equal to more than 31,000 GP visits.
Strong Support for Infrastructure
Residents strongly support new walking and cycling infrastructure.
About 86% support cycle tracks separated from traffic and pedestrians. Support has increased since 2023.
The survey also found 90% support lower speed limits and safer crossings near schools.
The index also shows a growing interest among women in cycling. Thirty-five percent of women said they would like to cycle but currently do not.
The survey included more than 1,100 residents aged 16 and older across the metropolitan area.
The study covers Waterford city and surrounding suburbs, including Passage East, Slieverue, and Ferrybank.
Researchers say the results highlight strong public support for further investment in walking and cycling infrastructure.
