Major waiting lists for adaption grants for people with disabilities highlighted

Waterford Council has suffered a 33% cut in its funding to adapt houses for tenants with a disability which is affecting the most vulnerable among us.

Fianna Fail Councillor Adam Wyse recently highlighted the case of Michael Mulcahy from Waterford who applied for a grant from the council 2 years ago and has been told that he wont be
assessed for at least 6 years because of waiting lists.

Waterford Council applied for half a million euro in funding this year but only received 200 thousand, a drop of 100 thousand since last year.

Michael Mulcahy suffers from a lung ailment and has to take steroids. These have had an effect on his skin and he bleeds easily.

"I am not looking for anything out of the ordinary" he told WLR, "98% of my cuts are from the shower. I am only looking for something that I will be comfortable with in my old age."

Adam Wyse says the most vulnerable are affected by this:

"We are talking about the most vulnerable in our society, the people that are in council houses for a number of years, that have serious medical concerns"

Director of Service Ivan Grimes says they're still taking applications.

"We will continue to receive applications... but the reality is with that level of funding we are not going to make any significant impact into the already significant number of people who are waiting."
