A local councillor has raised the issue regarding the lack of bus shelters in Tramore.

Councillor Joe Conway raised the issue at this month's metropolitan council meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, he says all local authorities should strive to provide adequate bus shelters for users of the service.

"It is one of the most desirable things in any local authority to have a good and well-used public transport system and [I am] reasonably happy with what we have, particularly with the service we have going from [the city] to Tramore.

"It isn't reasonable to expect people to elect to use public transport, and it isn't fair to punish people for using [the service] if they are systematically getting drowned every winter because of the fact we cannot provide bus shelters."

The Council has confirmed that funding is in place for more shelters in the town, however, no specific time period has been given as to when they will be delivered, but the council hopes they will be installed in time for next winter.

Councillor Conway continued to say that previous commitments did not materialise.

Delivering the service

"Another winter has gone by, and people have been rained on and they are feeling very demoralised and cross," Councillor Conway said to the chamber, "We as public representatives [were] ensured it would be in place, we promised people that the question had been addressed, and now we are left with egg on our face because nothing has been done.

"I would just like to ask the council, and the people who are driving this initiative, to get stuck in and try to deliver this particular service."

The council has said they have started designs on new bus shelters for Tramore through funding from the National Transport Authority.

Councillor Conway says that he is not asking for every stop to be sheltered, but that there be an adequate number provided.

He continued to say," Nobody is asking for a plethora or an invasion of bus shelters, but five or six strategically located along the ring road, and in populated areas would be a great assistance in getting people to use the public service.

"You cannot expect people to buy into a public transport service if you are having them out in all weathers getting absolutely drowned for their efforts.

"Whoever is in charge of the initiative, tell us where we are at here and now and get the finger out."
