The Lismore water storage project has reached a key milestone, with confirmation that a planning application will soon be submitted.
Sinn Féin TD Conor D. McGuinness has welcomed the move but warned that authorities must now prioritise delivery without delay.
Uisce Éireann has confirmed its intention to lodge the application, following sustained pressure from local representatives and the wider community.
Long-standing issues with water supply
Deputy McGuinness said the project is vital for the town. He pointed to ongoing problems with water supply in Lismore.
Residents have faced repeated outages, poor pressure, and an unreliable system. He said the current infrastructure is not fit for a modern town.
He also highlighted years of underinvestment in West Waterford. He said both he and Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy have pushed for the area to be prioritised.
Call for urgent action and funding
The Lismore water storage project now needs to move quickly through planning. McGuinness said the Government must ensure the process avoids unnecessary delays.
He also called for full funding to be secured so construction can begin as soon as possible.
He warned that the project cannot be allowed to stall at planning stage.
Impact on homes, businesses and growth
The lack of reliable water supply has had a serious impact on daily life in Lismore.
Households have experienced extended outages. Businesses have faced disruption and financial loss. Schools, childcare facilities and care settings have also been affected.
The issue has also slowed housing development in the area. McGuinness said inadequate infrastructure has become a barrier to growth and sustainability.
Public pressure highlights urgency
More than 1,300 people signed a petition last year calling for action on the issue.
McGuinness said this level of support shows how serious the situation has become. He added that the Government must now act quickly to deliver a reliable and fit-for-purpose Lismore water storage project.
