The much loved Munster Bar in Waterford City closed on Easter Saturday, having traded under the ownership of the Fitzgerald family since 1953.

The announcement has been met with sadness from many locals in Waterford as well as tourists who have fond memories of the popular pub.

Speaking to WLR News, Michael Fitzgerald described Saturday as "bittersweet" and reflected on the reasons behind the decision.

"I'm 74 this year, Peter is 64, we've had a good run and have had good times," he said.

"It's hard but you have to make decisions. This was our home, I was born and reared here and so was Peter - it's not just a business."
