Despite local efforts, the Post Office in Kilmeaden, in County Waterford is to close in two weeks time.
Staff were informed of the closure yesterday following the decision of the Postmaster to retire.
The postmaster made the decision after finding out it does not fit the criteria for funding as part of a scheme setup by the Minister for Communications.
50 million euro is being put towards the post office network by Denis Naughten but Kilmeaden is deemed to be catered for under the scheme.
Local Fianna Fail Councillor John O'Leary says it's very disappointing for the area.
He says they did everything they could to try to avert this decision.
