This Saturday, May 3rd, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, the Tiarlán Country and Farmlife store in Kilmeaden will host a community-driven property marking event aimed at deterring rural crime.

Organised by Muintir na Tíre and coordinated by Ned Kearney, the initiative encourages farmers and rural residents to bring along valuable equipment, such as tools, trailers, and machinery, for on-site branding using their driving licence number. This allows Gardaí to trace stolen items back to their rightful owners, enhancing the chances of recovery.

The event comes at a time when rural crime remains a concern. A 2022 survey by Technological University Dublin found that 55% of Irish farmers have been victims of theft, with equipment and tools accounting for over 20% of reported incidents. Despite this, only 11% of stolen items were recovered, underscoring the importance of preventive measures like property marking.

In addition to enhancing security, the event supports a worthy cause. Donations collected on the day will go to the Solas Cancer Support Centre, providing vital services to individuals and families affected by cancer in the Waterford area.

Attendees are advised to bring portable items for marking and to ensure that the machinery is clean and accessible. For more information, contact the Tiarlán Country and Farmlife store or visit Muintir na Tíre’s official website.
