A man who drowned in a kayaking incident off the Waterford coast is understood to have been a man in his 60s from Northern Ireland who was staying in the Dungarvan area.
A multi-agency search operation had been underway across Monday night into Tuesday morning, after he failed to return to shore at an agreed time to An Rinn near Dungarvan.
The alarm was raised a short-time later.
The kayaker left the Helvick Head area at 11.40am and had not been heard from or seen since.
The search operation involved rescue teams from Ardmore, Bonmahon, Dunmore East, Tramore and Helvick as well as Rescue 117 and the LE Aoibhinn.
A Department of Transport spokesperson said wind and low-lying mist made conditions challenging.
Members of his family travelled from the North on Tuesday morning to formally identify his body.
His name has not been formally released yet.
It’s understood he had gone to sea on Monday with a ‘waistcoat-style’ buoyancy aid.
He was on his own and became separated from his kayak at some stage.
