The official launch will take place this morning of the Waterford Community Safety Plan.

The Waterford Community Safety Partnership has been up and running for almost a year and is one of three pilot programmes nationwide.

The partnership sees local communities work with State services to help deter and prevent crime in their areas.

Simon Harris - who is also the Minister for Justice - will launch the programme at City Hall this morning.

Chairperson of the Waterford Community Safety Partnership, Seán Aylward, says: "It's a mix between the voluntary sector, the community sector, things like residents associations, the Council, agencies like An Garda Síochána and the Fire Service, all of whom work together to make Waterford as safe as it can be."

During previous meetings, survey results have been displayed regarding how safe people feel in the community, particularly if young or part of marginalised groups.

These results then feed in to strategies to address and promote safety within Waterford.
