Now is not the time be doubling the special 9% VAT rate for the hospitality sector.

That's according to Colm Neville, Chair of the South East branch of the Irish Hotels Federation.

Finance Minister, Paschal O Donoghue, announced the change in September's budget which is due to come into effect in Feburary 2023.

The Federation warned yesterday that next year will be very very difficult for the sector.

Colm told Déise Today the government needs to revisit its decision.

"When people have less money in their pocket, holidays are one of the areas that will will take a hit," he said.

Colm says The Irish Hotels Federation are calling on the government to reverse their decision.

Most, if not all, aspects of running a hotel are increasing in cost.

The price of linen, food, and energy are still going up.

"It's certainly not the time to be doubling the VAT next February," Colm said.
